How to Decrease or Stop Gambling
Many have decreased or stopped problematic gambling.
You can too!
Here are some strategies that have worked for others:
-
-
Honesty
Be honest with yourself and others about the amount of time and money you’ve been putting into gambling and its negative impacts
-
Block Gambling
Put up blocks between you and your next bet, e.g. self exclusion or deactivate online accounts
-
Resist Urges
When you experience a pull to gamble, take some time to remind yourself of the consequences of gambling, do something distracting, and make a conscious decision to not gamble today
-
Accountability With Money
Make it harder to access money, e.g. ask someone you trust to hold your credit card or monitor your accounts and spending
-
Get Help
Connect with the many options for gambling help and support, e.g. counselling, recovery meetings or online forums
-
Change Your Mindset
Let go of the idea that you can gamble your way out of this problem. With gambling addiction, even if there is a win it typically ends up going back into gambling
-
Rebuild Self Worth
Connect with people and activities that start to rebuild your self worth. Gambling addictions leave people heavy with guilt and shame and not feeling good about themselves.
